Colorguard

Here at HSU, the colorguard is considered a section (like trombones, percussion, or clarinets) within the Showband of Arkansas. The HSU Showband of Arkansas Colorguard consists of up to 25 spinners, performing five shows throughout the fall football season. HSU's Colorguard is a great way to continue your love of performing after high school! Auditions are mid-April every year for the following fall.

PREPARE FOR THE AUDITION

Please prepare the following:

  • Basics (See below for specific requirements)
  • Individual routine: This is your time to show the judges what you do best! The individual routine should showcase your ability to successfully execute a prepared routine. You will be judged not only on your guard skills, but also on your showmanship, body technique, professionalism, and entertainment value. The routine time limit is 1:30-2:00 minutes. At least one minute of the routine must be on flag. You may choose to incorporate rifle in your routine if you so desire, as long as you fulfill the required flag portion of the routine. It is important to choose music that is engaging and tasteful. Music chosen should be the clean version.

LIVE AUDITION

Saturday, May 6, 2023 - HSU Evanson Band Hall

Your audition will consist of:

  1. Performing Basics
  2. Performing Solo as described above.
  3. A group routine taught by HSU Colorguard Instructor

Schedule

  • 10:00 a.m.-11:45 a.m. - Learn fundamentals and short routine
  • Noon - Perform short routine
  • 12:30 p.m. - Lunch
  • 1:30 p.m. - Students perform prepared routine

Colorguard Requirements

  • Attire is black dance wear

Basic Requirements

  • Drop Spins (Right & Left)
  • Carves (Right & Left)
  • Pull/Pole Hits (Right & Left)
  • Thumb Flips (Right & Left)
  • Toss (Vertical) (Single, 1.5, Double)
  • Horizontal Toss
  • 45 Toss (With and without carve)

Please note that we understand everyone's style of colorguard varies. If you are unsure of what the above skills are, please demonstrate the basic skills you were taught in your previous program.

All new members will be notified by May 8 if they have been accepted into the Showband of Arkansas Colorguard.
