When you join the Department of Music, you become a member of an organization with a long tradition of musical excellence. Fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music since 1957, the department is a team of devoted artists and teachers fulfilling our mission of producing highly qualified musicians and educators. The department is large enough to provide great opportunities for ensemble participation, including membership in the Showband of Arkansas®, yet small enough to offer the individual attention you will need to succeed.
As a Reddie musician, you can choose a course of study that fits your own career goals. Our degrees include:
- Bachelor of Music degree in instrumental, keyboard, or vocal education. This plan includes a professional education component in preparation for teacher licensure and certification.
- Bachelor of Arts degree. This plan includes the study of music as part of a broader, liberal arts perspective, including significant coursework in a minor field.
With an option to pursue studies as a music major or minor, and ample opportunity to perform in one or more band or choir ensembles, there is a place for you in the Department of Music. Sign up to audition for a scholarship, or check out our student handbook for more information on department policies and procedures.
Mission Statement
The Music program is a community of educators and artists dedicated to producing musically proficient graduates who will achieve the highest standards of teaching and performance. Serving Southwest Arkansas and surrounding regions, the program is committed to the development of students who are skilled, knowledgeable, and well-prepared music educators, performers, and scholars. A student-centered approach is enlisted to produce students who can think critically, creatively and will influence and enrich the musical lives of the communities in which they live. Opportunities are provided for the students to study music as a liberal arts education and engage in artistic experiences. The general public will be engaged through musical performances of the highest order in a broad range of styles and genres.
Program Goals
The music program strives to:
- Prepare music majors for productive careers as music educators, performers, creators, and scholars, as well as study at the graduate level;
- Provide a general music curriculum for non-music majors that develops their musical talent and introduces them to the discipline of music through appreciation and basic skills courses;
- Ensure a highly personalized and supportive environment;
- Enrich the cultural life of the university, city, and region, through excellence in instruction, performance, and outreach.
