The historic Captain Henderson House is not accepting reservations during the winter and spring months of 2025. The university is currently developing a business plan and expects to reopen Captain Henderson House in late summer 2025.
The Captain Henderson House consists of eight guest rooms (six upstairs and two downstairs) with private bathrooms. The downstairs also includes a parlor, music room, sunroom, conference room, dining room, two bathrooms, an office, and commercial kitchen.
As Dr. David Sesser writes in the Encyclopedia of Arkansas, this Queen Anne-style home with Craftsman and Neoclassical additions was originally owned by Charles Christopher Henderson, for whom Henderson State University was named. Moving with his family to Arkadelphia in 1869, Charles Christopher Henderson worked in several businesses—most notably in banks, timber, and railroads.
Henderson State University purchased the Captain Henderson House in 1978 and first operated the property as a museum and then a bed and breakfast through 2020 and again from August 2022 through December 2024. The property was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 24, 1998.
Renovations to Captain Henderson House were graciously funded by the Arkansas Natural and Cultural Resources Council in 2021.
