Master of Arts in Teaching - Special Education

Henderson State University's Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Special Education can help you earn your Arkansas standard teaching license while earning a master's degree and increasing your earning potential as a teacher. Our faculty provide an all Online curriculum that allows for flexibility in your schedule.

The program is designed and developed to allow a candidate with a bachelor's degree or higher an alternative route to teacher licensure in special education. The field-based program focuses on areas exhibited in the four domains of Charlotte Danielson's Framework for Teaching.

The candidate is employed as a Teacher of Record with a provisional license or placed in an internship while completing class work and requirements necessary for a standard Arkansas teaching license.

Online

Courses meet online. Instruction, lectures and student presentations are delivered using web conferencing (Zoom and Big Blue Button).

Admission Requirements

  • Hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university

  • Complete Graduate School Application and be admitted to the Graduate School

  • Submit original sealed transcripts for all undergraduate work

Submit passing scores for GRE or Praxis Core and Praxis II content area

    • GRE Verbal 145 or Praxis Core Reading 156

    • GRE Quantitative 145 or Praxis Core Math 150

    • GRE Writing 3.5 or Praxis Core Writing 162

  • Entrance Interview

  • Complete background checks

  • Employment as a Teacher of Record with a provisional license or placed in an internship

The National Education Association estimates that educators with a master's degree can earn as much as $64,883. In its Occupational Outlook Handbook, the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that teaching jobs will grow by 6 percent through 2024 because of growth in student enrollment.
