Campus Safety

Earthquake

In the Event of an Earthquake:

  1. DROP - Drop down to your knees on the floor and stay low. Avoid windows, handing objects, mirrors, and tall furniture.
  2. COVER - Take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture. If that is not possible, seek cover against an interior wall or an interior corner, face the wall/corner and turn your back to any windows. Protect your head and neck by clasping both hands behind your neck, bury your face in your arms, close your eyes, and cover ears with forearms.
  3. HOLD - Stay in that position until the ground stops moving.

If you are in a multi-story building, do not use the elevators.

If you are outdoors, assume the DROP & COVER position in an open area, away from trees, signs, buildings, or electrical wires and poles. Hold books, backpacks and coats over your head for protection.

If you are on a sidewalk near buildings, duck into a doorway to protect yourself from falling bricks, glass, and other debris.

If you are in a wheelchair, stay in it. Move to cover, if possible. Lock your wheels and protect your head and neck with your arms.

If you are in a stadium, theater, or auditorium, stay in your seat and protect your head with your arms. Do not try to leave until the ground stops moving. Then exit in a calm, orderly manner.

Be prepared for aftershocks, and plan where you will take cover when they occur. Be prepared to Drop, Cover, and Hold again.

After an Earthquake:
