HSU Choirs

The Henderson State University Vocal Division, under the direction of Dr. Jonathon Barranco, consists of a large non-auditioned Concert Choir and a select University Chorale. We are committed to the personal and musical growth of each singer, as well as the enrichment of both students and audience members. Choir members come from a variety of disciplines and majors across the university, and scholarships are available regardless of major. There is a place for you in the HSU Choirs.

Concert Choir

The Concert Choir is a large ensemble open to any student with singing experience, regardless of major. The ensemble performs advanced choral literature from a wide variety of time periods and genres. In addition, the HSU Concert Choir has a long history of performing with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Members of the Concert Choir have toured throughout Europe and Asia, and have performed in Carnegie Hall. Membership is open to all students. No audition is required.

University Chorale

The University Chorale is a small, select group of about 28-32 singers. It is comprised of the top vocalists at Henderson, and members of the ensemble perform challenging a cappella and accompanied choral works reflecting a variety of styles and genres. The HSU Chorale travels on school-sponsored tours and serves as the flagship ensemble of the Henderson State Vocal Division. Membership is open to all students by audition, regardless of major. Auditions are held at the beginning of each fall semester. (An audition is required, as is membership in Concert Choir.)

Opera Workshop

Opera Workshop allows students to study the art of theatrical singing. Each semester vocalists rehearse and perform repertoire from the world of opera and musical theater, and stage these works with the use of costumes and scenery. There are also frequent collaborations with the HSU Theatre Division.
