Vocal/Choral Audition & Scholarship Information

2023-2024 Vocal/Choral Scholarship Audition Dates:

  • December 2
  • February 10
  • March 2
  • April 13

Applying for a Vocal/Choral Scholarship

  1. Choir scholarships are available to any student wishing to participate in choir, regardless of major.
  2. Complete the online Audition and Scholarship Application.
  3. If you are unable to attend one of the audition dates listed above, please contact Dr. Jonathon Barranco, Director of Choral Activities, to discuss an alternative audition date.

Audition Requirements

Choral Music Education

  1. For the voice audition, prepare one memorized solo song in any language. *Please do not use a choral piece for this audition. Your choir director can help you select an appropriate solo piece.*
  2. A short interview will help the faculty learn about the auditionee and why they want to be a choral teacher/director.
  3. Aural skills, sight-singing, and rhythm skills will also be assessed. Auditionees will hear several short phrases played at the keyboard and be asked to sing them. A short sight-reading example will also help to assess sight-reading skills.
  4. Complete a music theory/aural perception diagnostic exam. (This is merely diagnostic and will not impact a potential student's scholarship eligibility.)

Bachelor of Arts

  1. For the voice audition, prepare one memorized solo song in any language. *Please do not use a choral piece for this audition. Your choir director can help you select an appropriate solo piece.*
  2. A short interview will help the faculty learn about the auditionee and why they want to pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree.
  3. Aural, sight-singing, and rhythm skills will also be assessed. Auditionees will hear several short phrases played at the keyboard and be asked to sing them. A short sight-reading example will also help to assess sight-reading skills.
  4. Complete a music theory/aural perception diagnostic exam. (This is merely diagnostic and will not impact a potential student's scholarship eligibility.)

Music Minors

  1. For the voice audition, prepare one memorized solo song in any language.
  2. Music Minors do not need to schedule an aural skills test.
  3. Complete a music theory/aural perception diagnostic exam. (This is merely diagnostic and will not impact a potential student's scholarship eligibility.)

Non-Music Majors/Minors

Scholarships are availble for non-music majors who wish to particpate in the choral program. If you are interested in a non-major scholarship please email Dr. Jonathon Barranco (barranj@hsu.edu) to set-up an audition.

*A Note on Virtual Auditions*

Two of our audition dates include a virtual option. Should you choose a virtual audition please follow these procedures:

  1. Submit your solo piece via unlisted youtube link or google drive link to Dr. Jonathon Barranco at barranj@hsu.edu two days prior to your virtual audition date.
  2. Complete a virtual interview and aural skills test. Someone will reach out to you to schedule this.
  3. Complete a music theory/aural perception exam. (This is merely diagnostic and will not impact a potential student's scholarship eligibility.)

Guidelines for Applying for an Academic Scholarship/Virtual HSU Campus Tour

  1. If you are considering attending Henderson State University in the Fall of 2024, you should complete an Application for Undergraduate Admission as soon as possible.
  2. All fully admitted first-time freshman students, who submit their official high school transcripts, will be evaluated for a scholarhsip, no test score required. Academic scholarships range from $750 to $6,000 per year and are awarded to students based on cumulative high school GPA. A Distinguished Freshman Scholarship (full tuition) is available to a limited number of qualifying students who choose to submit ACT scores.
