THE STEPHEN R. BISSETTE COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
Huie Library acquired the papers of award-winning cartoonist Stephen R. Bissette in 2003. The artifacts in this collection provide a behind the scenes look at both the artistic process and the business of publishing comics. The collection includes personal letters and communications with many comics professionals, proposals, working drafts, and "dummies" of projects that never saw the light of day. A researcher will be able to study Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell's From Hell, originally created for Bissette's Taboomagazine, from conception to creation to execution to publication. There are two drafts of Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics, including chapters McCloud abandoned prior to completion and publication of the finished work. The collection also charts the entire birth, life, and death of Bissette's independent publishing ventures, Taboo and Tyrant. And, of course, the collection provides an overview of Bissette's own 25 years working in the medium, industry, and community of comics.
