Digital media is helping Patrick Dupew 'find his voice' at Henderson
Patrick Dupew
Can you please introduce yourself (including your hometown, academic status, etc.) and share a bit about your background and the major you’re pursuing?
My name is Patrick Dupew. I am from Burleson, Texas, which is just south of Fort Worth. I am a sophomore at Henderson State and I'm here to pursue HSU's Digital Media Production major, which is a major that covers many fundamentals of the modern communication, advertising, and entertainment industry.
What inspired you to choose your current major?
I have always had a keen eye for visual storytelling, so much so that I surpassed my own parents in visual media literacy when I was about 13. This sort of thing has always come very naturally to me.
Why did you choose Henderson to pursue your degree?
It is one of only a handful of universities in the country to offer such a robust and innovative program, and the school's smaller size allows for a lot of hands-on learning opportunities. It’s topped off by the absolutely gorgeous, nature-focused campus and surrounding area.
What has been your favorite class so far, and why?
My favorite class so far has been "Innovative Media Project" with Scott McKinnon. Towards the end of the semester, I got the pleasure of using our on-campus film set to experience firsthand what being on a set and working with a lot of the current technology is like.
Are there any professors who have had a significant impact on your college experience?
Scott McKinnon and Paul Glover. The way they both encourage creativity, individuality, and most of all, ambition, has been integral to this transformative time in my life while I "find my voice," as my dad likes to put it.
Are you involved in any clubs, organizations, or extracurricular activities on campus?
I am involved in Henderson's NuFusion Jazz Band, directed by Dr. Rick Dimond, as well as marching and concert band directed by Nevada Mills.
What advice would you give to incoming students to make the most of their experience at Henderson State?
Henderson State University is a place that rewards individuality, both academically and socially. So, no matter what you're doing, approach it with the full confidence of a 4-year-old wearing a Batman t-shirt.
Is there anything you wish you had known when you first started college?
I wish I was more prepared for the freedom that I've been given, which is funny, considering that's something you long for your entire childhood. The idea of "finding your voice" is something that is quite intimidating at first, however, in the months after starting college, I learned just how freeing it is.
What are your career aspirations or plans after graduation?
After I graduate Henderson, I plan to enroll in a master's program for film direction. I'm looking at California School of Arts. The goal is to become a film director and be able to share my stories, experiences, and the lessons I've learned in my life through this beautiful medium.
