Boswell named Fellow by Texas State Historical Society

The Texas State Historical Society has bestowed the title of Fellow to Dr. Angela Boswell, professor of history and dean of Henderson State University’s Ellis College of Arts and Sciences.

Boswell joins an esteemed group of historians who have shown a special aptitude for historical investigation through distinguished published works or other exemplary scholarly activity. The announcement and presentation was made Feb. 25 during the TSHA’s annual meeting in Austin, Texas.

“The TSHA is one of the oldest and largest state historical associations in the country, and to be named a fellow of the organization is the ultimate recognition of my scholarly career,” Boswell said. “I am so honored to have my name listed with more than 200 of the most eminent scholars of Texas history from the past 125 years.”

Boswell has had an interest in Southern history from the time she was a young girl when her family vacationed in the South at areas of historical significance.

After receiving her B.A. in history and English, she focused on history in graduate school and later earned her Ph.D. in history.

Boswell has published numerous articles and reviews, along with several books, mainly about Southern women’s roles in history.

Her book, Women in Texas History, won the 2019 Liz Carpenter Award sponsored by the TSHA. The book also won the Robert A. Calvert Book Prize and Lone Star Book Award.

She also won the Liz Carpenter Award and Ottis Lock Award for a book she co-edited in 2016 with Deborah M. Liles entitled Women in Civil War Texas: Diversity and Dissidence in the Trans-Mississippi.

Boswell’s 2001 book, Her Act and Deed: Women’s Lives in a Rural Southern County, won the Liz Carpenter Award.
