Pre-Licensure BSN Admission Policy and Procedures

Policy

The Department of Nursing will solicit applications from pre-nursing students to determine admission to the Nursing Program. The nursing program consists of 4 semesters of nursing courses.

Students may apply as follows:

  • With the completion of all required prerequisite courses.
  • Within one semester of completing all required prerequisite courses.
  • Students who require completion of only one course beyond Spring semester, may request a waiver. If waiver is granted, the course must be completed complete at the end of HSU’s Summer Term 1.
  • The Nursing as a Profession course may be completed during the first semester of the nursing program.

The Nursing Faculty will serve as a Committee-of-a-Whole for this process, and the Chair of the Nursing Academic Standards Committee will preside over the process.

Student selection is based on multiple factors, including (but not limited to):

  • Nursing GPA of 2.7* or higher consists of the following courses:
    *Beginning with admissions for 2028, an overall GPA of 2.75 will be required
    • College Algebra or Quantitative Literacy**
      **Quantitative Literacy will not be accepted for the 2028 application cycle and beyond
    • General Chemistry
    • General Psychology
    • A & P I and II
    • Microbiology
    • Sociology
    • Nutrition
    • Oral Communication
  • Nursing Entrance Exam (TEAS test) score: An overall score of 60% or above is strongly recommended.
  • Number of math, science, and social science courses that have not been completed

Prerequisite Course Repeats and Calculations

Pre-Nursing students can repeat a nursing prerequisite course for a grade replacement in the

Nursing program admission GPA score calculation.

  • For repeated math and science courses, the average of the most recently completed two courses will be used.

Procedure

  1. Applications will be accepted after December 15 for the 2026 admission cycle.
  2. Students must submit a completed nursing application by the published deadline (February 28)
  3. The candidate information will be compiled onto a spreadsheet, noting:
    • Nursing GPA
    • Math, science, and social science courses that are not completed
    • Nursing Entrance Exam (TEAS test) scores (TEAS score of 60% or greater is strongly recommended)
  4. Nursing Academic Standards Chair will convene a faculty meeting as soon as is conveniently possible following the spreadsheet compilation.
  5. Faculty will determine if the candidate will gain admission, will be placed on the waitlist, or will receive a denial letter.
  6. The Department of Nursing will continue accepting applications until February 28.
  7. Students will be notified of status (conditional acceptance, wait list, or denial) by March 21.
  8. Should admission candidates decline or forfeit their conditional acceptance by failure to meet admission deadlines, the Prelicensure Nursing Program Coordinator, in consultation with the faculty and the Chief Academic Nursing Officer, will select a new candidate from the Wait List.
  9. The Prelicensure Nursing Program Coordinator, in consultation with the Chief Academic Nursing Officer, will be responsible for correspondence and communication with the Wait List candidates.
