Henderson hosts printmaking exhibit

Works by student printmakers from across Arkansas are on display through Feb. 25 at Henderson State University. “Hot Off the Press” is an invitational event that involves 10 Arkansas colleges and universities.

“This exhibit showcases the outstanding work of many young artists in the state,” said David Warren, associate professor of art education and printmaking. “It takes a special talent to create prints with an element of originality and technical skill.”

Printmaking is the fine art process of transferring ink to paper.  The transfer usually comes from a matrix plate.  Common matrices include copper and zinc for engraving or etching; stone, aluminum, or polymer for lithography; blocks of wood for woodcuts and wood engravings; and linoleum for linocuts. Screens made of silk or synthetic fabrics are used for the screen-printing process.

The exhibit can be viewed from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday in Henderson’s Russell Fine Arts Gallery. Ann Prentice Wagner, curator of drawing and works on paper at the Arkansas Arts Center, served as the exhibit’s juror.

Universities participating in the exhibit include: Hendrix College, Ouachita Baptist University, Arkansas State University, Harding University, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Arkansas Tech University, The University of the Ozarks-Clarksville, Lyon College, and Henderson State University.

“This is a great opportunity to connect with other colleges and students from around the state,” Warren said. “It also gives other universities a chance to observe Henderson’s outstanding art program.”

Henderson’s excellent faculty, small classes, and great facilities give its students a unique opportunity to become strong artists, graphic and media designers, and art educators. It is considered to be one of the best programs in Arkansas.

Henderson’s faculty includes professional artists, designers, and scholars who pursue active professional careers as well as their work in the classroom.
