Sean J Smith Dance Project coming to HSU

Sean Smith

Henderson State University will host The Sean J Smith Dance Project Oct. 11-15. Smith will teach three dance master classes that are free and open to the public. He will also work with the HSU Dance Company, culminating with an “informance” Oct. 15 at 3 p.m. in the dance studio.

Smith has trained with Goh Ballet Academy, Ballet British Columbia, and The Ailey School. He has performed with Bruce Wood Dance Project, Rhythmic Souls Tap Company, Dallas Theater Center (The Wiz in 2011 and Hairspray in 2018), and African American Repertory Theater, for which he received the Irma P. Hall Black Theater Award for Best Choreographer.

Smith is now in his 12th season with Dallas Black Dance Theatre and serves as Rehearsal Assistant. He has performed works by Alvin Ailey, Talley Beatty, and Matthew Rushing, among others, and has taught for Ailey Athletic Boys, Peridance Capezio Center (NYC), and Southern Methodist University.

Smith will lead the following master classes at Henderson:

  • Dance Master Class, Oct. 12, 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

  • Artist Talk: Historical Connections, Oct. 14, 1:30-2:45 p.m.

  • Modern Dance Master Class, Oct. 14, 3-4:30 p.m.

He will work the HSU Dance Company each day from 4:30-8:30 p.m.

The master classes are open for participation, and the informance and dance company rehearsals are open for observation.
