Alumni Profile: Phillip Turner, Class of 2014

Phillip Turner (‘14) was very involved in campus activities during his undergraduate years at Henderson State University, including serving as Student Government Association president. He is currently an associate in the financial services practice representing financial institutions and other entities in a variety of corporate and commercial financing-related matters.

When did you graduate, and what was your major?

May 2014; public administration, minor in business administration and finance

Why did you choose Henderson?

I wanted to be a pilot! Great aeronautics program.

Who were your favorite professors?

Dr. Bailey, Dr. Steinmiller, Dr. Khan and at least a dozen others.

What is your current occupation?

Corporate attorney in Atlanta. I do financial services work in the leveraged finance sphere.

How did Henderson prepare you for your career?

Hone speech skills, prioritization of requirements, work-life balance, and how to have compassion with your work.

What is your favorite memory of Henderson?

Every situation where Ricki Rebollar (’14, ‘16) was present, every moment with Alpha Phi Omega and Student Government Association, and speaking at the investiture for Dr. Glen Jones as president.

When was the last time you were on Henderson’s campus?

I ought to be ashamed. 2014, around homecoming.

What other job do you think you’d be really good at?

Judge, professor, or a career services advisor.

How do you relax after a hard day?

It’s been a while since I’ve relaxed. But I’m always on the hunt for a new restaurant. I also like to sit on my balcony with a nice bourbon and watch the sunset.

Who do you admire the most, and why?

My mom for how she works wonders in raising me and my siblings.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Spend 3 months in a country that you don’t know much about, and fully embrace the country.

What’s the hardest lesson you learned?

If you’re not happy, God is trying to tell you something.

What are three interesting facts about you?

1. I’m the youngest of 8.

2. I serve on numerous boards and organizations devoted to bettering the lives of the Black community, LGBTQ+ community, and students interested in the law.

3. I am undefeated in the courtroom.

If you could make one rule that everyone had to follow, what would it be?

Do everything with love and compassion in your heart.
