 Position Summary
The Business Consultant is responsible for providing small business consulting services to entrepreneurs with an emphasis on financial analysis, financial projections, business planning and preparing business owners for capital acquisition. In addition, the Business Consultant may provide consulting services to Arkansas entrepreneurs seeking marketing related help. The Business Consultant is responsible for assisting the Arkansas Small Business and Technology Development Center in obtaining the performance measures and economic impact goals. This is a full-time, grant-funded position.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides loan proposal and financial projection development assistance to new and existing small businesses
  • Conducts analysis of financial statements in order to identify potential problems and opportunities as well as counsel businesses on achieving and maintaining business financial health
  • Provides consulting assistance to include development of business plans; assessment of current business activities; and conducting and utilizing market research to make recommendations to small business clients
  • Provides assistance to include development of marketing strategies and marketing plans; assessment of current online and offline marketing activities; and conducting and utilizing market research to make recommendations
  • May instruct small business training events and assist with development of curriculum
  • Conducts outreach within the business community and works with small business lenders to generate consulting referrals for impact projects
  • Maintains and documents client records and related work activities in a manner consistent with program guidelines
  • May work with graduate assistants in delivery of services and students and faculty to facilitate student experiential learning
  • In collaboration with the Center team and the Lead Center Communications Manager, develop and implement marketing for program events including creating event print and electronic marketing collateral, writing news releases and radio/newspaper advertising; creating social media posts
  • Earns 32 hours of professional development annually according to professional development policies of the organization
  • Adheres to university and ASBTDCconflict of interest standards
  • Maintains confidentiality
  • Performs other duties as assigned in order to accomplish the goals and mission of the organization

 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to prepare loan proposals for financial institutions
  • Knowledge of small business finance and financial management
  • Ability to conduct financial ratio analysis and make recommendations based on the results of the analysis
  • Ability to communicate financial information to individuals and business owners with varying degrees of financial knowledge
  • Experience working with government small business financing programs
  • Ability to conduct and utilize market research
  • Ability to assist business owners in developing financial projections
  • Ability to assist small business owners with a variety of traditional and alternative marketing platforms
  • Ability to conduct and deliver training in a classroom setting
  • Excellent writing, public speaking and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to conduct outreach to generate referrals of impact clients
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Ability to meet the requirements to operate a vehicle on official state business
  • Ability to conduct evening and weekend work
  • Ability to travel in-state and out-of-state including overnight stays as required

Required Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree with significant coursework in business including finance and accounting as well as direct experience with financial statement analysis

Preferred Education and/or Experience

  • Master’s degree in business, accounting, or other related field
  • Three or more years direct experience with conducting financial analysis, loan proposal preparation and developing financial projections outside of the classroom
