Job Description:  The Veterans Upward Bound Education Specialist will work with 125 veterans to motivate and assist participants in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education.  The Education Specialist is responsible for assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas.  The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which veterans enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. 

Qualifications:  Henderson State University is an Equal Opportunity Employer/Affirmative Action Employer with a significant commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty, staff, and students.  In pursuit of this commitment, preference will be given to candidates that possess a Master’s degree (preferably in counseling, social work, education, or related areas) and/or at least four years’ experience in the U.S. military and possess the following qualities:  compassion, empathy, ability to work well with others in a team or independently, adaptability, leadership skills, ability to take instruction from others, openness to others ideas and opinions, and strong computer skills.  The Education Specialist must have a great depth of knowledge of VA Education Benefits and some knowledge of other military benefits, to make referrals as needed.  The Education Specialist must be open to and have the ability to work with faculty and students, facilitating group workshops in academic advising, financial aid/college applications, and academic counseling.  The Education Specialist will contribute ideas to create curriculum necessary to educate and prepare participants for post-secondary education, therefore, creativity is an essential quality that a candidate should possess. Candidates for this position will present on a related topic to assist Search Committee in evaluating the candidate’s level of communication and their knowledge of college preparation and VA benefits. 

Salary:   Contract is for a federal grant position October 1, 2018 - August 31, 2019, for a salary dependent on qualifications and experience.  The Veterans Upward Bound grant is a federally funded program and is contingent upon new grant funding.
