Director of Intramural Sports and Outdoor Programming

Position Title:   Director of Intramural Sports & Outdoor Programming

Department:      Student Services / Campus Recreation

Reports To:     Director of Campus Recreation / Vice President of Student Affairs and Student Success


This is a full-time 12-month position that reports to the Director of Campus Recreation.  As a member of the professional staff of the Division of Student Affairs, the Director of Intramural Sports & Outdoor Programming will develop and administer a comprehensive intramural/outdoor program for a diverse campus community.  The position will also assist in the operations of the Dunn Student Recreation Center.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hiring student workers, supervising student workers, scheduling, training and evaluating all intramural officials and student supervisors with strong emphasis in student development.
  • Knowledge of field maintenance, field dimensions and all related sport field preparation. (markings, boundaries, safety issues, field setup, etc.)
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for all intramural events with emphasis in risk management and student satisfaction.
  • Administer intramural sports leagues, tournaments and special events.
  • Development and implementation of an on-going process of program evaluation and make recommendations for continual improvement.
  • Coordinate use of facilities with fellow administrative staff, insuring all facilities, fields (mowing, painting, etc.), and equipment provided for use of club sports and Intramural programs
  • Responsible for communicating effectively with recreational team captain’s and officers, members, advisors, etc.
  • Oversee the development, implementation and monitoring of an annual operational plan and the associated budget for the intramural and outdoor program.
  • Coordination of the inherent Risk Management with in the activities offered in intramurals and in outdoor programs.
  • Responsible for management, supervision, payroll and hiring paperwork for all work-study personnel.
  • Coordinate the training sessions for all Intramural officiating courses and monitor the officials throughout the leagues, seasons and activities.
  • Coordinate travel arrangements for all extramural attended tournaments and all scheduled outdoor programming adventure trips.
  • Recommends innovative program policies and procedures that would create new interest in the student population.
  • Attend campus committee meetings and directors meetings as requested
  • Conduct staff meetings, pre-trip meetings, coaches meetings, etc.
  • Teach education courses that develop skills to participate in outdoor adventure programs, such as Backpacking, Fly fishing, Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Paddle Boarding, Wilderness Survival, etc.
  • Work closely with Building and Grounds staff and other college offices to provide arrangements for special events, and other collegiate uses of the facility.
  • Oversees coordination of necessary inspections, safety training, and first aid kits in the outdoor program area.
  • Be knowledgeable of the natural resources in the state of Arkansas and develop programs that utilize these resources
  • Keep meticulous records of equipment repairs and accidents in the outdoor programming area.
  • Responsible for general repair and maintenance on outdoor equipment.
  • Enhance the outdoor programming area and manage its inventory and it programs.

Qualifications / Experience

Required Bachelor’s Degree; preferably in Recreation, Health, Physical Education or related field and 3 years’ experience in related field.  Master’s degree preferred in Recreation, Health, Physical Education or appropriate field experience in the following area’s required: related graduate assistantship experiences will be considered, experience with development of student organizations, members, officers, and advisors, experience with Sports Clubs, special events, budget, spreadsheets and familiarity with sports specific software, position requires ability to work evenings and occasional weekends.  Challenge Course experience and strong hiking/navigational skills preferred.  ARC CPR, First Aid and AED instructor certification preferred. Experience with Intramural Sports is preferred.

Physical Requirements:  Frequent movement between sites; prolonged exposure to computer  monitors and outdoor temperatures; heat, cold, wind, rain, etc.; frequent direct interaction with faculty, administrators, etc., demanding intensive concentration and excellent listening skills; must prioritize well and focus on completion of tasks and objectives while under stress of a demanding work schedule, maintains a positive and objective “customer service” approach and attitude even when confronted with difficult situations.

Certifications / Licenses / Registrations

  • CPR/AED/First Aid Certifications preferred (must obtain within first month of employment)
  • Registered Sports Official preferred
  • Become member of field related associations and field related certifications. (NIRSA, ACPA, NCAA, NRPA)
