Summary of Employee Benefits

Health Insurance

Health insurance is available to all benefit eligible employees. Currently HSU’s health insurance plan is Health Advantage/Open Access POS Plan 302. This insurance is administered by Blue Cross/Blue Shield. Health insurance becomes effective on the first day of the month following the hire date regardless of the day of the month in which you begin employment.

Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is available to all benefit eligible employees of HSU. This insurance is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield Dental Blue. Dental insurance becomes effective on the first day of the month after which you have completed 30 days of service. If you start on the first day of a month that has 31 days, it would become effective the first day of the next month, as you would have completed 30 days of service. Otherwise, it would be the first day of the month in two months. 

Vision Insurance

Vision plan is available to all benefit eligible employees. This insurance is administered by VSP. Vision insurance becomes effective on the first day of the month after which you have completed 30 days of service. If you start on the first day of a month that has 31 days, it would become effective the first day of the next month, as you would have completed 30 days of service. Otherwise, it would be the first day of the month in two months.

USAble & Shelter Insurance

Provides several voluntary supplemental insurances. These include short-term disability, voluntary group term life, cancer, intensive care, etc. policies. The enrollment for these is once per year during the annual open enrollment period which is held in November. Coverage for these insurances become effective in February 1st of the year.

Retirement Programs

Arkansas Public Employees Retirement System (APERS)

APERS is the plan used by employees of several cities in Arkansas as well as institutions of higher learning. Members are vested in this plan after completing five (5) years of service. Participants and the University contribute to this system in accordance with state law. APERS is a defined benefit plan.

Alternate Retirement Plan

Alternate Retirement Plan was established by Act 436 of the 1967 legislature. It authorizes Teacher's Insurance and Annuity Association and College Retirement Equities Fund (TIAA-CREF) to provide an alternate plan of retirement for teachers, administrators, and staff. Members are vested in this plan immediately. Participants and the University contribute to this system in accordance with state law. Additional deductions (above the mandated employee contribution) to TIAA-CREF may be requested under the SRA plan. TIAA-CREF is a defined contribution plan.

Group Life Insurance

Group life insurance coverage, administered by MetLife, is provided at no cost to all benefit eligible employees. The amount of coverage is based on the employee's annual salary. Group life insurance becomes effective on the first day of the month following the hire date regardless of the of the month in which you begin employment.

Long-term Disability Insurance

Long term disablitiy, administered by Jefferson Pilot Financial/Lincoln Financial, is provided for all benefit eligible employees. The benefit of the plan assures employees of receiving up to 66.7% of their contract salary up to $7,500 maximum. The waiting period for eligibility, after a physician's certification is six (6) months or 180 days. Long term disability insurance becomes effective on the first day of the month following the hire date regardless of the day of the month in which you begin employment.

Tuition Benefits

Tuition benefits are provided to employees of HSU who are employed a minimum of 20 hours per week or greater.
