The history degree involves comparative studies of diverse societies whose values, social structures and activities contributed to their progress, stability or decline. By examining the record of the human past, students cultivate the abilities to assess data, evidence and conflicting interpretations, thus developing skills in critical and logical thinking, and effective communication. Through the study of history, students gain the tools to achieve individual and collective self-understanding, thus allowing them the opportunity to appreciate their own society as well as diverse world cultures, and to participate as concerned, intelligent citizens.
