Department of Communication and Theatre Arts
The CTA department is composed of three related degree programs: Communication (COM), Mass Media (MMC), and Theatre Arts (THA). Each of these areas offers the Bachelor of Arts degree as well as minors. The department also offers a minor in Dance.
You’ll find an innovative blend of courses, group projects, one-to-one teaching, and access to the kind of technological resources that will make your head spin… in a good way. You can focus your studies on communications, mass media, writing for the media, or theatre and dance and you’ll enjoy loads of co-curricular opportunities like our student-run radio station The Pulse, our TV station HTV, and our newspaper The Oracle; as well as our award-winning student organizations Pi Kappa Delta, Lambda Pi Eta, and the debate and forensics teams. Longing for the limelight? Or maybe you'd rather manage the goings-on backstage or design an eye-catching set. Whatever your interest is, there are plenty of ways for you to get involved.
If expert guidance is what you want, Henderson is the place for you. Our faculty are dedicated teachers who’ve achieved amazing things in their fields. For instance, one of our mass media professors recently was one of three featured writers in an issue of National Geographic Traveler. An assistant professor had a documentary film featured at the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival. And two members of our theatre and dance faculty earned fellowships from the Arkansas Arts Council.
With a degree from the department of communication and theatre arts you’ll have gained a set of skills and knowledge that can be applied to a wide range of career fields. Advertising. Public Relations. Law. Education. Digital media. Writing. You’ll find our graduates in impressive positions across the country, using the kind of knowledge and creativity that make people take notice. Graduates of the program have entered respected graduate schools, and you’ll find graduates of the theatre program acting in New York and Los Angeles, teaching, and working as lighting technicians, stage managers, designers, and production managers.
